A self-adhesive mask from the Omask brand for spraying the walkways on the wing of the Focke-Wulf Fw 190 fighter. The mask is stuck onto a finished painted model, the walking surfaces are sprayed over with paint, and once dry the mask comes off. It is not a decal and not a photoetched part.
With sprayed walkways it is not only how you stick the mask on that decides the result but above all how you take it off. The most common way of ruining it comes at the moment when the paint is still soft or, on the contrary, has long cured and built into a thick layer - in both cases a piece of the edge tears away while it is being peeled off. The ideal moment is shortly after the paint is dry to the touch and firm; pull the film slowly, at an angle backward against itself, and never straight up. If you can feel resistance, help yourself with the tip of a toothpick and hold the model by a solid part, not by fragile protrusions.
Let the camouflage under the mask dry properly, and with some paints rather give it an extra day. Before sticking it on, reduce the tack of the film by pressing it briefly onto the back of your hand. Line the part up against the leading edge and the wing root, press it down around its perimeter with a toothpick and lay the paint on in two or three really thin passes. A thick layer creates a step at the boundary that you can feel, and in this scale it is clearly visible. Any sheen at the edges is evened out by a final flat varnish over the whole model.
