What the accessory is for
A gate plays two roles in a scene at once. Visually it closes the composition off, so that the viewer's eye does not wander away over the edge of the base, and at the same time it creates a logical place for things to happen — a vehicle naturally stops at an entrance, a figure stands there, or materials pile up. A ready-made item also saves the work of marking out and cutting sections. The 1:35 scale is the most common one for dioramas, so the gate is easy to combine with vehicles, figures and paving of the same size.
Tips for fitting and painting
A dry run first, gluing only afterwards. Check the vertical and whether the gate sits in the plane of the wall, and mark any opening in the wall out from the actual part. Clean and degrease the surface before painting, level any flash with a file and sand it back. Choose the glue according to the material of the part and of the groundwork. The painting is most rewarding in three steps: a base coat, an overall tone and a dark wash, which brings out the texture of the surface; a dry brush then accentuates the edges and the places where the material wears in reality. Fill out the transition to the terrain with earth, dust and fine vegetation at the foot.
