What the accessory is for

On a diorama a gate works as a frame. It focuses the eye on a single point, lets the edge of the base be hidden and offers a natural place for figures or a vehicle brought to a halt. In scenes with a boundary wall it also solves a practical problem: a long, unbroken wall looks flat, whereas an entrance gives it rhythm. The 1:35 scale is the most widespread one for dioramas, so the item can be joined with ordinary vehicles and with figures from other sets.

Tips for fitting and painting

Try the part dry and adapt the wall or the terrain to it, not the other way around. Watch the vertical and the way the bottom edge meets the ground — a slight sinking into the terrain looks more believable than standing on the surface. Clean and degrease the surface before painting and level any flash from casting. Choose the glue according to the material of the part and of the groundwork. Build the painting on a base coat, an overall tone, a dark wash into the texture and a dry brush on the edges; for believability it helps to shade the surfaces slightly, so that the gate does not read as one flat mass. Finish with dust and mud at the foot and in the corners.
