A turned metal barrel for the German 2 cm Kw.K. 38 automatic cannon in 1:35 scale from the Polish brand MASTER. There is one piece in the package. It is not a vehicle kit but a replacement part with which the plastic barrel on a model is replaced.
The Kw.K. 38 was an automatic cannon of 2 cm caliber mounted in the turrets of German-built light tanks and armored reconnaissance vehicles of the Second World War. The thin, long barrel, utterly dominant when the vehicle is seen head on, is characteristic of these vehicles, and that is why it matters more here than on guns of larger caliber.
It is exactly with small calibers that the limits of injection-molded plastic show most. The molding tends to be split into two halves with a seam along its whole length, slightly bowed and with a solid muzzle. Sanding the seam off without thinning the part is difficult, and drilling the muzzle in a thin barrel without the bit wandering is harder still. A turned metal part arrives straight, with a bore true to its axis and without a single parting line; at the same time it takes the handling of a finished model, where the barrel is the most exposed spot.
Cut the plastic barrel off at the face of the turret, redrill the hole with a hand drill to the diameter of the pin and try the fit dry. Glue with cyanoacrylate or slow epoxy, which lets you align the axis; check it from above as well as from the front. Degrease the metal before painting and use a primer for metal, otherwise the paint will come off when the model is handled. The usual weathering of armor then shows well on the barrel: slight scorching and wear at the muzzle, dust in the transition to the turret. Fit the barrel only after the clear coat and any decals are done.
This is an accessory to a model, not a standalone kit. Glue, paints and the base model are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
