A plastic kit of the German Flakpanzer V Ausf.A anti-aircraft tank in 1:35 scale from Hobby Boss. The model captures a development project of the end of the Second World War which built anti-aircraft armament onto the chassis of a medium tank. It is supplied unassembled and unpainted.
The designation Flakpanzer V refers to the chassis of the Panther tank, that is, the Panzerkampfwagen V. In the last phase of the war the German side was looking for an anti-aircraft vehicle that would keep pace with armored units and at the same time have enough armor for the crew to survive an attack from low altitude - the existing anti-aircraft tanks built on lighter chassis were underpowered for that role. The answer was to be an enclosed traversing turret with quick-firing armament on the Panther chassis, which, unlike open superstructures, would protect the crew even while firing. The project stayed at the development stage and never reached series production nor combat use, which makes it a rewarding and frequently built subject in modeling.
The Panther chassis means a lot of wheels and careful seating - build the running gear on a flat surface and let it cure thoroughly. The turret with its high-set armament dominates the view, so take care over sanding the joints and over the squareness of the barrels. Proceed through a primer and an airbrush; with late German vehicles it suits to build the camouflage up from the base tone to the patches and to keep the transitions soft. At the end bring out the joints and rivets with a dark wash, carefully rub the edges with graphite or a metallic pigment and dust the underside with pigments. The model works well even on a simple base.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
