The period marking 1939 to 1940 is part of the name, and for a modeler it is a practical piece of information: the cut of crew clothing changed over the years, so a set marked this way belongs to vehicles of the matching period and does not get mixed up with later figures in the same line.
The clothing of armored vehicle crews had a short, close cut with no long skirts, so that it did not get in the way when moving in a cramped space. From the point of view of painting the key thing is that it is a dark fabric, and dark fabric is one of the hardest painting jobs of all. Never paint it pure black: build the base in a dark gray, lighten the edges of the folds by two steps and leave pure black only for the deepest recesses. Without that range the whole figure merges into a silhouette and all the work on the folds disappears. A color cast helps too — a drop of blue or brown in the gray brings the surface to life without the shade ceasing to read as dark.
Wash the parts in lukewarm water with a drop of dish soap, or the paint will peel off the residue of mold release agent. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw or a cutting disc; nippers tear resin. Sanding is done wet and with breathing protection, gluing with cyanoacrylate glue, and the gaps at the shoulders and the neck are filled. For dark clothing a black or dark gray primer pays off — it saves a coat and keeps the shapes sharp. Lead the painting with a dry brush or with thin glazes; oils are an advantage here, because they let the transitions be blended even after they are applied. Keep the skin lighter and warmer, by contrast, so that it stands out against the dark fabric. At the end a matte clear coat, or the dark surfaces gleam unpleasantly and read as plastic.
