A terrain base for a diorama in 1:35 scale on the theme of a house. A building is a rewarding element in a scene: it gives the display scale, closes the view into the background and creates surroundings for the hardware and the figures in which something can happen. A firm outline to the ground also frames the scene, so a finished diorama is easy to carry and to display.
The base is the foundation of the whole composition, so it is worth laying that out before you reach for the glue. Set the model and the figures up dry first, find the viewing side and only then glue them down. You then fill the open areas with static grass, rubble or small equipment according to the period you are building.
Wash and degrease the surface before painting. Cut the excess material away with a sharp blade a little way from the base and sand the surface. Choose the paints and the glue according to the material of the base; the particular procedure is given in the manufacturer's instructions. On masonry surfaces a dark glaze drawn into the joints and a dry brush on the edges have proved themselves, and a final light dusting then joins the building with the ground around it.
For modelers who want to build a city or village scene in 1:35 scale and do not want to shape terrain from the start. It will also serve as a display ground under a single model, where the structure works as a background. Even a beginner will manage it, because the most laborious part, the ground of the terrain, is done.
