What the windows are for in a scene

The believability of a factory building stands or falls by the openings. A wall of card or plaster can be managed, but a window with a fine division of the panes is work a modeler is glad to save himself by using a finished element. A numbered version within the range also serves to keep a front from being monotonous: alternating two or three types of window comes across more faithfully than a single repeated shape, because real halls were built up in stages.

Tips for placing it in the scene

• Draw the opening in the wall out from the element, so that it fits snugly and with no joints.
• Seat the windows before you weather the front, so that the patina follows on from the masonry.
• Leave a dark area or a suggestion of an interior behind the opening, or the wall will come across as a board.
• Marks of water running down below the sill and a layer of dust in the corners of the window frame will add more to a scene than another damaged opening.
