This is not a soldier figure or a kit but a decorative diorama accessory: a lion statue in 1:35 scale. Small details like this do not make a scene, but they reveal how well it has been thought through - empty plinths and bare walls look uninhabited, while one well-placed sculptural element gives a place its history. The scale matches the most widespread range of military vehicles and figures.
The lion is the most common guardian figure in European architecture. It sits at the foot of town hall steps, at the gateways of manor houses, on bridge piers and at the entrances to parks, and it does so from the Baroque to the historicist buildings of the late nineteenth century. In a wartime diorama it therefore has wider use than one might expect: it does duty as a remnant of civilian life among the ruins, as a point of reference in a city scene, or as evidence that the fighting has reached the grander part of town. It serves just as well in a civilian view without any military vehicles.
Place the statue where an architect would have put it - symmetrically about the axis of an entrance, on the corner of a low wall or on a gate pier. An art object simply set down in the middle of an open area gives away that it is an add-on, whereas on a plinth beside a flight of steps it fits right in. Add a low wall, steps or paving in the same scale and the scene takes on a natural fall.
