An injection-molded plastic kit of the American M110 self-propelled howitzer in 1:35 scale from the Italian brand Italeri. The 1:35 scale is the standard for military vehicles, and on an open-mounted gun it pays off twice over: practically the whole carriage, the breech, the elevating mechanism and the crew positions are visible on the vehicle, so the model offers considerably more detail than a closed tank. The kit is supplied unassembled and unpainted; the exact contents of the package and the marking options offered depend on the manufacturer's current release.
The M110 is an American 203 mm self-propelled howitzer, that is, eight inches. It came about in the 1960s as part of a family of heavy self-propelled weapons built on a common tracked chassis. The design is deliberately austere: a low tracked hull with the engine at the front, an openly mounted barrel with a massive breech on top of it, a hydraulically operated recoil spade at the rear that transfers the recoil into the ground when firing, and open positions for part of the crew. The rest of the crew and the ammunition supply were carried by an accompanying vehicle. It stayed in service for decades and was used by a number of armies outside the United States.
Start with the running gear and the carriage; both are harder to reach with a brush or an airbrush once the model is finished. Paint and weather the road wheels, the tracks and the underside of the hull before you close them in. The open structure means you will be able to see inside: it pays to clean up the joints inside the carriage carefully and not to forget the shadows, otherwise the model will look flat inside. Apply the base green or camouflage coat in thin layers over a surfacer. Build the weathering from the top down: first a darker wash into the engraved lines and around the rivets, then a dry brush on the edges and finally dust and mud pigments on the road wheels, the tracks and the lower part of the hull. Bring out the metal surfaces of the barrel and the breech with a light rub of graphite or metallic pigment.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
