A set of a wooden meadow fence in 1:35 scale from Matho Models, pattern A. This is a diorama prop, not a vehicle kit: a simple enclosure of posts and cross rails of the kind that lines pastures, meadows and field tracks. A country fence is a classic compositional element — it leads the viewer's eye through the scene and gives it both scale and depth.
A meadow fence is completely timeless: it works in a nineteenth-century scene, with Second World War vehicles driving through a village, and in a present-day rural subject. Run it along a lane or diagonally across the scene — a diagonal always helps the composition. A broken section with snapped rails is a convincing addition to wartime subjects; around a pasture the fence is naturally completed by vegetation and perhaps animals.
Weathered wood is the basis of credibility: paint the fence a medium brown, lay a grayish filter over it and lighten the edges with a dry brush — old wood turns gray in the sun. A dark wash settles the joints and the feet of the posts, and a greenish tint near the ground suggests moss. Set the posts into pre-drilled holes in the terrain, glue them with PVA or super glue and keep the line of the fence slightly irregular — a perfectly straight country fence does not look natural.
