This item is not a vehicle kit and not a figure but a standalone accessory: a model of the German MG 42 machine gun of the Second World War in its early production form, worked out in 1:35 scale. It serves to equip kits of armored and truck vehicles, dioramas and figure scenes where the part from the original mold does not reach the necessary fineness. The set comes from the Czech manufacturer Special Hobby, and in its range of 1:35 accessories it stands alongside a second item with the late variant of the same weapon, so the modeler can choose the form matching the chosen period.
The MG 42 was a German general purpose machine gun in 7.92 mm caliber introduced during the Second World War. In design it followed the earlier MG 34, but it was markedly simpler to produce, because the load-bearing parts were pressed from sheet metal instead of being laboriously machined. Its characteristic features are the perforated barrel jacket, the quick-change barrel, the folding bipod and the high rate of fire. The weapon was used in the infantry role on a bipod and on a mount, and at the same time as vehicle armament, so on a model it turns up in two entirely different situations. The early and later production series differed in workshop details, and that is exactly why the manufacturer lists two separate items.
Accessories of this size are fitted after the basic build, ideally just before the final painting, so that they do not get damaged along the way. Separate the fine parts with a sharp scalpel or a fine-toothed saw and then sand the cut surfaces. Use cyanoacrylate glue, which holds small parts more reliably than solvent cement for plastic. Degrease the part before painting and spray it with a primer. The metal of the weapon looks convincing when a dark base is picked out discreetly with a dry brush on the edges and a wash draws the shadows into the perforated jacket.
