Masking set 1:35 M1114

This is not a model but an aid to painting. The masks are cut in advance to the shape of the surfaces that are to stay unpainted after spraying, and they are stuck onto a model in 1:35 scale that is already under way. The set is intended for the Bronco kit.

The small parts are the real work here

Besides its large windows the armored Humvee has a row of small details: lights, turn signals, marker lamps. It is with those that outlining by hand fails most often: the area is so small that the brush fills the whole frame and the detail disappears. A pre-cut mask removes that problem, but it has to be handled differently from the large pieces.

Use

• Lift the small masks off the sheet with the damp point of a toothpick, as on tweezers they stick to the metal.
• Work over a light base, because a small mask dropped on the carpet is searched for in vain.
• Seat the mask dry, check the position and only then press it down.
• With round lights, mask before you set the part into the body; it is harder to work with once it is in the opening.
• Direct the airbrush so that the stream does not go under the edge of the mask from the side.
