An injection-molded plastic kit model of the PT-76B amphibious light tank in 1:35 scale from Trumpeter. The box captures the later B version with a stabilized 76 mm gun, here in the form used by the Polish Army. The model offers a hull with its float-like shape rendered in detail, the running gear and the turret; decals for this form are provided.
The PT-76 was an amphibious light reconnaissance tank of Soviet design from the Cold War period. It was notable for its light, thin-walled hull with a large volume for buoyancy and for propulsion in the water by a pair of waterjets at the rear. It was powered by a diesel engine and its main armament was a 76 mm gun; the B version brought stabilization of the gun and better firing performance. Thanks to its ability to swim it served mainly with reconnaissance and airborne units and became the basis for a whole family of derived amphibious vehicles. Besides the USSR it was in the inventories of a number of other armies including the Polish one.
It pays to finish and paint the running gear and the lower hull first, because they are harder to reach once assembled. Glue the plastic with thin modeling cement, sand the joints and apply an undercoat (primer) before painting. You bring a single-color finish to life by lightening the upper surfaces with an airbrush. The characteristic look comes from final washes in the recesses and dry pigments imitating mud and dust on the running gear and the sides of the hull.
