About product

Pz.Kpfw. T-34 747(r) in 1:35 scale from ICM

This injection-molded plastic kit from the Ukrainian maker ICM captures the Soviet T-34 medium tank in German service. In the Wehrmacht, captured T-34s were given the designation Pz.Kpfw. T-34 747(r), where the suffix in brackets refers to the Russian origin of the equipment. The model is based on the variant armed with the 76 millimeter gun, that is the tank the German side captured in the greatest numbers. The kit is supplied unassembled and unpainted.

The real subject

The T-34 was a Soviet medium tank with sloped armor, wide tracks and a V12 diesel engine, which from 1941 onwards fundamentally influenced the development of armored vehicles. The German army routinely put captured and repaired machines into its own units, especially in 1942 and 1943, when the shortage of equipment was keenly felt. The vehicles were given conspicuous German crosses and other large markings, so that their own units would not confuse them with Soviet tanks. Some machines went through modifications, most often the addition of a commander's cupola taken from German types, which improved the commander's view. The use of captured tanks nevertheless stayed limited: it was constrained by the number of repairable examples and by the constant problem of spare parts and ammunition.

Building and painting tips

Finish the running gear and the inside of the hull before you close the hull up, because once it is glued you can no longer reach them. It is practical to paint the wheels and the tracks separately and fit them only after the hull has been sprayed. Captured vehicles give unusual freedom in painting: both Soviet green with German markings painted over it and an overspray into a German shade, as well as a combination of the two, are documented. For weathering use a dark wash in the recesses, pigments for mud and dust effects in the wheel arches and on the tracks, and a lighter drybrush on the edges. Apply the large identification markings only after the basic weathering, so that they look freshly painted on, which is exactly how it looked on captured equipment.

Who the model is for

  • Anyone interested in the armor of the Eastern Front
  • Modelers looking for an unconventional color scheme on a well-known tank
  • Builders of dioramas on the theme of captured equipment
  • Collectors of T-34 variants in 1:35 scale

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is the German number for captured Soviet equipment; the letter in brackets refers to the country of origin. T-34s taken into German units were marked this way.

The model is based on the variant with the 76 millimeter gun. The version with the 85 millimeter turret reached German hands only later and in smaller numbers.

No. This is an ordinary injection-molded plastic kit that can be built without any additions. Photo-etched sets are an optional improvement.
