It serves to replace the parts that cannot be molded thin enough in plastic — typically grilles, hinges, brackets, sheet-metal edging and fine fittings of the body. The Raupenschlepper Ost, RSO for short, was a fully tracked tractor developed in Germany during the Second World War for use in ground where wheeled vehicles got stuck — in deep mud and in snow. In design it was a simple utility machine with an open driver's compartment, or one covered by a sheet-metal cab, a flatbed body at the rear and wide tracks with low ground pressure. The variant designated type 01 came from the production of the Steyr firm and used its 1500A series piston engine. The vehicle was used above all for towing guns and for supply transport.
Separate the photo-etched parts with a scalpel on a hard surface. Make straight folds in a bending tool or over the edge of a steel ruler, and on long edging work in sections, so that the fold stays straight. First sand the plastic detail that the set replaces down flat, otherwise the new part will not seat. Bond with super glue applied with the tip of a toothpick. On utility vehicles it pays to assemble and paint the running gear before you cover it with the body. At the end, complete the whole with a dark wash into the recesses and dry pigments for mud and dust effects, which suit this type of equipment better than a clean finish.
