A scenic ground for a diorama in 1:35 scale working up a damaged entrance to a building with a staircase. Stairs are an exceptionally useful item in diorama work: they bring height into an otherwise flat composition, and with it the chance to work with several levels on which figures or small equipment can be arranged.
It is worth deciding in advance where the viewer's eye will be led. A figure placed a step higher than the others naturally draws attention, while the lower step takes a detail that would be distracting elsewhere. Try several variants dry and compare them with a camera; on the screen you will see disproportions the eye does not notice on the bench.
The treads tend to be worn exactly in the middle, where people walk; you achieve that by lightening the center of the tread gently and darkening the edges instead. The masonry exposed under the broken plaster takes a warmer tone than its surroundings, so that it separates from them in color. A dark color flowed in draws the joints out, and dust pigments then settle the whole thing into one setting.
