The front wheels of a half-track vehicle are carried on an unpowered axle and serve to steer the vehicle; a sharper turn is helped by braking one track. On a model they are seen whole, from the side and from the front, so every simplification shows on them. The set replaces them with separate parts carrying the tread of one type of tire, the one marked Deka Grip.
Tires for tractors and carriers were supplied by more than one company and their patterns differed from one another. For the builder that is a welcome detail: two identical vehicles on one diorama can be told apart by nothing more than having a different tread, and when building from a period photograph the pattern can be matched to the subject. The Sd.Kfz. 251 and Sd.Kfz. 11 stand on a related chassis, so one set serves both types of model.
Cut the excess material away with a sharp blade a little way from the part and sand the remainder down; a sharp cut and light sanding spare the tread more than nippers do. Wash and degrease the wheel before painting, and choose the glue according to the material of the parts and the manufacturer's instructions. Seat the wheel vertical, with the same angle on both sides. Reach for dark gray on the tire rather than black; the edges of the pattern are then brought out by a dry brush, and the gaps between the blocks are filled by settled dust and mud from the terrain the vehicle drives over.
What is supplied is an add-on set of front wheels. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
