About product

Sd.Kfz.254 half-track scout vehicle 1:35 (Hobby Boss)

An injection-molded plastic kit of the German Sd.Kfz.254 armored observation and reconnaissance vehicle in 1:35 scale from Hobby Boss. The richly broken-up set contains photo-etched parts and individual track links and captures the unique convertible wheel-cum-track chassis, which allowed running on wheels as well as on tracks.

The real subject

The Sd.Kfz.254 grew out of the Austrian Saurer RR7 artillery tractor, developed from the middle of the 1930s. After the annexation of Austria by Germany it went on being built in an armored form. Its special feature was the convertible wheel-cum-track running gear: on the road it could run on wheels, while off road it was lowered onto its tracks. It was powered by a diesel engine. The vehicle served mainly for artillery observation, reconnaissance and liaison and was used in North Africa, in France and on the Eastern Front. Only around one hundred and thirty were built.

Building and painting tips

The most demanding parts are the convertible running gear and the individual track links, so assemble them patiently and paint the running gear and the interior before closing the hull. Use thin modeling cement on the plastic, prime the whole model and paint with an airbrush. Depending on the deployment choose a gray, a sand or a three-color base, which you bring to life with a dark wash in the details, picked-out edges and stronger dust and mud effects with pigments on the tracks and the chassis.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of German equipment of the Second World War
  • Anyone interested in unusual wheel-cum-track designs
  • Modelers who will appreciate a richly broken-up set
  • More experienced builders, because of the individual track links

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It had a convertible wheel-cum-track chassis: on the road it could run on wheels and off road it was lowered onto its tracks. It served mainly for artillery observation and reconnaissance.

Yes, the set contains individual track links that are assembled from parts; the result is realistic, but the build calls for patience.

Because of the complex wheel-cum-track running gear and the individual track links it is a set better suited to more experienced modelers.
