The real subject

The PMN-2 is a Soviet anti-personnel pressure mine that followed on from the older PMN type and spread to a number of armies. From the wooden mines of the Second World War it differs at first glance: the body is cylindrical and plastic, and on the upper side it carries a rubber pressure pad divided into a cross. The mine arms itself after a delay once the safety is removed, so whoever lays it has time to walk away. It is a type that is counted on in present-day scenes too, not only in historical ones.

What the set contains

Ten PMN-2 mines in 1:35 scale. A higher count makes sense, because mines appear in a scene together: laid out in a belt, lined up in a crate or made ready on a tarpaulin beside a sapper. The remaining pieces come in handy for further dioramas.

Building and painting tips

The parts are small, so work over a surface where you will find them again if they drop, and pick them up with fine tweezers. Cut the excess material off with a sharp blade a little away from the part and sand the remainder, then wash and degrease the surface. The body of the mine is usually in a dark shade of green or brown and the rubber pressure pad darker, even black; it is precisely this difference of two tones that gives a mine away on a model. Apply the paint in thin coats, so that it does not flood the cross on the upper face, and knock the sheen back at the end with a matte clear coat.

Into scenes with sappers, with infantry and with equipment in 1:35 scale, whether it is a matter of laying mines, of searching for them, or of a marked lane through a minefield. Paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
