This is a diorama accessory in 1:35 scale, not a model of a machine. The set stands for Soviet street lighting poles and is listed as number two in the manufacturer's range. Street lighting is one of the elements that most quickly give a diorama a particular place and period without your having to build a whole block of houses.
A vertical pole breaks up the horizontal line of the roadway and the sidewalk and shows the viewer at once how large the vehicle beneath it is. In built-up areas it also helps to lead the eye into the depth of a scene if you line the poles up along a street. The set suits views from the Eastern Front of the Second World War, postwar and Cold War subjects and civilian city scenes of Eastern Europe. It also works well as a counterweight to a vehicle that would otherwise dominate a scene on its own.
Keep regular intervals along the road and the same orientation of the arm toward the roadway, because real lighting was installed to a plan. Suggest the ordinary street context around the foot of a pole too, whether a curb, paving or a strip of grass. One pole at the edge of the base left only partly visible will make clear that the street carries on outside the scene. Try the arrangement out dry first and judge it from the viewer's position.
