This is a diorama base cast in resin, that is a finished ground for a scene in 1:35 scale. The motif is a slice of city street on which a figure, a vehicle or a whole composition can be set. It is not a model of a building or of equipment: the base itself depicts nothing as its main subject but serves as the setting into which the modeler places his own model. It is made by Black Dog, a Czech firm focused on resin accessories and diorama grounds.
A street ground is one of the most versatile diorama motifs. It works for figures on foot, for an armored vehicle driving through built-up streets and for civilian scenes, and because the surface is flat it will carry a heavier model as well. It suits European urban scenes in particular. The base also solves a practical problem: the model has a defined surface to stand on and does not slide or tip over in a display case.
First wash the casting in lukewarm water with a drop of detergent so that the mold release residue disappears. Cut off casting remnants with a saw and sand the surface wet with respiratory protection. After a base coat, lay on the base shade of the street surface, ideally several close tones so that the area does not look all of one piece. Bring out the joints with a dark wash, go over the edges with a dry brush and finally add pigments for dust and mud, especially along the edges and in the places where dirt would naturally gather. Try the placing of the model dry before you glue anything down.
