About product

Zvezda 1:35 Sturmgeschütz IV (Sd.Kfz.167)

A kit of the German StuG IV assault gun in 1:35 scale from the maker Zvezda. It is an injection-molded plastic model which is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The ordnance designation Sd.Kfz.167 in the name corresponds to precisely this type, so the identification is unambiguous and cannot be confused with the older StuG III. In 1:35 scale it is a rewarding model with an interesting shape of the hull, on which the tracks, the running gear and the broken-up rear come out well.

The real subject

The StuG IV came into being by combining the chassis of the Panzer IV medium tank with a fighting superstructure derived from the late version of the StuG III assault gun. The solution was used after it became necessary to make up for a shortfall in production of the original type. The main armament was a 7.5 cm StuK 40 gun with a long barrel, mounted in the front plate of the superstructure without a rotating turret. The absence of a turret meant a lower silhouette and a simpler design, but aiming was done by turning the whole vehicle. Machines of this category were used as infantry support and to destroy armored targets from prepared firing positions. The vehicles carried various modifications, from the side armor skirts (Schürzen) to the protective Zimmerit paste against magnetic charges.

Building and painting tips

First finish the running gear and the inside of the hull everywhere you will no longer have access once the superstructure is closed. Assemble and paint the tracks separately from the hull and fit them only after the main coat. Use a liquid cement for plastic and smooth the joints of the superstructure carefully, because the welded edges are well visible on this type. Apply a base color before painting. For three-color camouflage schemes an airbrush at low pressure with soft transitions suits well, or masking with modeling putty. Build the patina in layers: a dark wash in the recesses and around the rivets, then a dry brush on the edges and finally pigments on the lower hull, the tracks and the fenders. The metal gun barrel and the bore deserve special attention, because they are the most conspicuous.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of German equipment of the Second World War in 1:35 scale.
  • Modelers who want to compare the StuG IV with the older StuG III in a display case.
  • Builders of dioramas with infantry and equipment in the same scale.
  • Modelers with experience of building tracked vehicles.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The StuG III stands on the chassis of the Panzer III tank, whereas the StuG IV uses the chassis of the Panzer IV. The fighting superstructure is related on both, but the hull, the running gear and the overall proportions differ.

Yes. Sd.Kfz.167 is the ordnance designation for precisely the StuG IV, so the name and the type designation agree with each other.

Rather for a modeler who has been building for a while. The tracks, the running gear and the camouflage call for patience and basic equipment, ideally an airbrush as well.

Check the contents of the package against the maker's instructions.
