This product is not a kit of the vehicle. It is a set of front wheels cast in resin for a plastic model of the American M54A2 military cargo truck. The wheels are cast as sagged, that is with a realistic deformation of the tire at the contact patch. The name identifies it as the variant with a civilian tread pattern, meaning the kind of tread seen on vehicles fitted with tires from ordinary civilian production, and it is the first of the variants offered separately.
On a heavy cargo truck the tires are large and visibly spread out at ground level under load. Plastic wheels from a kit tend to be perfectly round and to have a soft, blurred tread. A resin casting brings a crisp tread, legible lettering on the sidewall and, above all, the right shape where it meets the road. The front wheels are dealt with separately because they have a different tread pattern and construction from the driven rear wheels, and they are often turned as well, which is a very effective detail on a model with a steered axle.
The M54 is an American military cargo truck in the five-ton off-road category with drive to all axles, which served for decades from the 1950s on. It carried materiel, ammunition and troops, existed in a range of body versions and became one of the most widespread supply vehicles of its day. The A2 version is among the later forms of the family. In modeling it is a rewarding subject, because it goes with equipment from the 1950s through to later conflicts.
Wash the wheels in warm soapy water so that the mold release agent disappears. Cut the casting block away with a saw and level the mating surface wet, with respiratory protection. The flattened part has to face downward, and on turned front wheels check that it stays perpendicular to the road. Glue with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). Paint the tire a dark gray rather than black, and pull the tread out with a lighter dry brush. On a military cargo truck it is dust and dried mud, applied as pigments in the tread, on the sidewalls and in the wheel well, that tell the most.
This is a set of replacement parts in resin, not a stand-alone model. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
