This collector figure for a diorama shows an American paratrooper carrying a radio set on the march. According to the name it is the fifth item of the numbered line of marching paratroopers that Dynamo-Models has set in Normandy in 1944. The line is built so that the individual numbers together create a continuous column of figures in one stride, and the signaler in it takes on a role that otherwise has to be explained into a scene.
The signaler is the most useful figure of a whole column: thanks to him a scene has a story and the viewer sees at once that the column is heading somewhere and is in contact with someone. The position of the hands and the turn of the head match a man who is walking and operating the set at the same time. It is exactly this kind of pose that sets the figure apart from static ones and allows it to be placed in the middle of a group.
The khaki cloth of the jump uniform comes out best when you let a dark tone run into the folds and go over the edges with a dry brush one shade lighter. Leave the leather straps a little deeper and give them a gentle sheen, while the helmet, by contrast, should be knocked back to matte. The antenna and the straps of the set take a sharper accent. Choose the base according to the scene you are building, ideally with a rutted field track.
