Military modeling long revolved above all around equipment and uniforms, but the home front offers subjects no less rewarding: training, work in a factory, evacuation, life in a town. That is exactly where badges of societies and youth organizations come into their own, because they can turn a generic figure into a particular person with an affiliation and a role.
Defense and physical training societies were a mass affair in the 1930s and a large part of the population wore their emblem on their clothing. On a diorama it therefore does not read as an exception but as an ordinary part of civilian appearance. A detail on a lapel will thus give the scene credibility without drawing attention to itself.
Makers of home-front dioramas and modelers who want civilian figures with a story of their own among the soldiers. It will also be reached for by those who put together scenes from the prewar years, when military equipment need not appear in the scene at all.
