A pair of figures in 1:35 scale: a soldier and a child at the moment of reunion. A powerful figural subject for the closing scene of a campaign or for a case with a single view.
Responsibility details are not available.
A soldier lifting a child is one of the most powerful images of the twentieth century, and rendered as a model it works exactly as it should: without a single shot and without a piece of equipment it tells of the end of the fighting. That is precisely why such a view is often built on its own, on a small base where nothing is to draw the attention away.
A group of two figures makes greater demands on their positioning relative to each other than an ordinary figure set. The hands, the centers of gravity and the gazes have to match, or the meeting turns into a pair of accidental statues. It pays to glue both parts together dry first, to check the silhouette against the light from several sides and only then to reach for the glue.
The weight of the expression lies in both faces, so it pays to devote the most time of the whole build here. Working from a medium-dark base up to highlights on the forehead, the nose and the cheekbones serves well, with a child's skin taking a noticeably warmer and lighter tone than the weathered face of an adult. The contrast between them is part of the message.
The clothing, by contrast, is better kept in a muted range, so that it does not draw the attention to itself. A restrained scene in which only two faces shine will tell more reliably than a varied base full of details.
It pays to think the base over before building. A piece of paving, a doorstep or a heap of rubble is enough, but it has to be a place that holds the pair together and does not make the eye wander elsewhere. The smaller the area, the more strongly the gesture itself stands out.
The rest of the work is done by the lighting of the case. A single directed source from above will draw a soft shadow on the faces and the view gains a depth it would never have on an evenly lit shelf.
