A decal set in 1:35 scale from Star Decals. It carries markings for the T-54 tanks of the North Vietnamese army, which English-language sources denote by the abbreviation NVA. It is an accessory to a model, not a kit.
The T-54 is a Soviet medium tank of the postwar generation with a cast rounded turret and a 100 mm gun. North Vietnam obtained it from Soviet deliveries and deployed it in the later phase of the war, when the fighting shifted from guerrilla operations to the operations of regular armored formations. The markings on these machines tended to be plain, with tactical numbers on the turret sides predominating, rounded out by simple symbols. It is exactly that sparseness that is rewarding for a modeler: on the large area of the turret every number is clearly legible and its placement carries most of the character of the finished model.
The cast turret of the T-54 has a grainy surface and a pronounced curve, so a decal will not lie flat on it by itself. Polish the place under the number with gloss varnish, seat the decal and let a setting solution soften it until it follows the texture of the casting. The Vietnamese setting also invites bold weathering. Lay it on only after flattening down, so that the numbers look dusted over rather than stuck on.
The package holds only decals. The model, the paints and the varnishes are not included.
