A figure set from Dynamo-Models in 1:35 scale out of the Vietnam Serie, which the manufacturer devotes to scenes from the war in Vietnam. The set carries the name Cigarette Break, that is the scene of a break for a cigarette. It is a diorama accessory, not a vehicle kit.
Quiet scenes are among the most effective in diorama work. While a combat scene forces a modeler to deal with effects and dynamics, a break rests on a relaxed stance, on small gestures and on how the figures behave toward each other. The Vietnam subject suits that: the tropical setting, light equipment and improvised alterations to the uniform give the figures a character that lets a scene be told without a single shot. The manufacturer builds the Vietnam Serie as a coherent circle and the individual sets can be combined.
If you paint the set yourself, make sure the uniforms do not look freshly issued - a tropical setting dries colors out, and faded olive tones suit a scene better than saturated ones. Apply the undercoat thinly so that the faces and the folds of the cloth stay legible. A relaxed stance is read from the details, so it pays off to spend time on the hands and the direction of the gaze. Try the assembly dry in the target terrain; in quiet scenes the spacing between the figures counts for more than in combat ones. With dust pigment on the footwear and the trouser legs you link the figures to the base.
