Waffenträger Wiesel 1 MELLS is an injection-molded plastic kit from the brand AFV Club that captures the antitank version of the German light tracked weapons carrier. The mold is new and holds the launch container and the missile itself, a reworked running gear, a newly shaped driver's hatch, an antenna mount and a protective frame above the hull.
The Wiesel came about for the needs of the German airborne units, which needed an armored vehicle small enough to be carried by helicopter. It has served with the Bundeswehr since 1989 and has been through a number of modifications. The most striking of them concerns the armament: the wire-guided TOW missiles were replaced by the MELLS system, which works on its own after launch and lets the crew change position at once.
The small dimensions of the real subject mean that every inaccuracy shows. It pays to finish the running gear and the inside of the hull before the upper part is closed, and to fit the launch container only after spraying. The German camouflage comes out well when the transitions of the shades are sprayed with an airbrush and the areas are then toned down with a filter and a fine dust pigment.
The kit is supplied unassembled and without paint; glue, paints and tools are not enclosed.
