About product

Voyager Model 1:35 photo-etched set — the Finnish BT-42 assault gun

This basic photo-etched set in 1:35 scale is meant for completing a plastic kit of the Finnish BT-42 assault gun. It is not a kit of the vehicle but an accessory for the modeler: the brass parts replace thick-walled plastic sheet, clips and holders and add detail that injection molding cannot create. The set is cut for the Tamiya 35318 kit.

The real subject

The BT-42 was a Finnish rebuild of a captured Soviet fast tank of the BT series. A new, tall and unusually shaped turret with a howitzer of British origin was seated on the original chassis with its characteristic large road wheels. Only a small number of vehicles came about and the machine remained one of the most distinctive designs of its time. For the modeler it is interesting for its combination of a Soviet chassis, a Finnish superstructure and British armament, with which the small external details in particular stand out.

Preparing the surface and paint adhesion

Brass is smooth and paint holds poorly on it without preparation, especially on the edges and where you pick the model up during the build. So before painting, wash the finished photo-etched parts in warm water with a drop of dish soap, rinse them and let them dry without touching the surface with your fingers. Next comes a primer for metal applied by spraying in a thin coat; primer laid on heavily floods the fine relief of the photo-etched parts. Then build the paint up from several very thin coats. On parts that are going to be sprayed separately away from the model, work out in advance where you will hold them and leave a bit of surface there, or use double-sided tape.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of Finnish subjects and less usual rebuilds in 1:35 scale.
  • Modelers bothered by the thickness of plastic sheet and holders.
  • More experienced builders with the basic equipment for photo-etched parts.
  • Those preparing a model for a display case or a diorama with a Nordic theme.

A photo-etched set is an accessory for modelers; it is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. These are photo-etched brass parts for completing a plastic kit, which has to be obtained separately.

Brass is smooth and paint does not otherwise hold on it. Degreasing and a thin coat of primer for metal secure adhesion without flooding the fine relief.
