About product

Zimmerit decals for the Elefant in 1:35 scale

This set addresses one of the most demanding steps in building German vehicles of the Second World War: reproducing Zimmerit coating. Instead of scribing by hand into putty, the texture is laid on as a decal that is placed on the surface of the model and made to follow its shape. The result is an even pattern with the same depth over the whole area, something that putty applied by hand achieves only with a great deal of practice and plenty of patience. It is not a kit; the set assumes you already have the model of the Elefant tank destroyer.

The real subject

Zimmerit was a paste-like coating applied at the factory to the vertical surfaces of German vehicles. Its purpose was to make it impossible for magnetic anti-tank charges to attach: a layer with a coarse texture increased the standoff and the magnet did not grip. It was applied with a scraper and the texture was drawn into it with a comb, so every plant had a slightly different pattern. The Elefant, that is the rebuilt version of the heavy tank destroyer Ferdinand, is among the vehicles on which Zimmerit is a characteristic element of the surface, and on a model it shows at once when it is missing or when it is applied unevenly.

Usage and painting tips

Go by the manufacturer's instructions, because decals of this kind differ from ordinary decals in thickness and in behavior. In general the panels are cut by individual area, applied to a smooth and degreased surface and pressed into shape with a soft brush or a cotton swab. It helps to have the model sprayed with a base color in advance, because a decal holds better on a smooth finish than on bare plastic. Once it is dry, spray the whole thing over, so that the Zimmerit and the plastic merge into one layer, and only then do the shades and the weathering. The pattern of the Zimmerit is always brought out by a dark wash that runs into the grooves and by a dry brush over the edges.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers who build German vehicles and do not want to draw Zimmerit into putty by hand
  • Those who repeatedly fail to keep a hand-made texture even
  • Builders who want to save time and risk on one of the least pleasant steps of the build
  • More experienced modelers, because application to complicated shapes calls for a calm and steady hand

This is an accessory set, not a complete model. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It was a coating applied to the vertical surfaces of German vehicles so that magnetic charges would not grip them. On a model it is a prominent surface texture, without which the vehicle does not look believable.

No. It is an accessory set of surface texture. The model of the Elefant tank destroyer you need to have of your own.

It holds best on a smooth, degreased surface sprayed with a base color. You will find the exact procedure in the manufacturer's instructions, and we recommend keeping to it.

Spray the whole thing with the base color, so that the Zimmerit merges with the plastic, and then use a dark wash in the grooves and a dry brush over the edges.
