A set of photo-etched parts in thin brass sheet, intended for detailing a plastic model of the Pz.Kpfw.IV Ausf.F1 tank in 1:35 scale. It is not a model of a vehicle or a kit — it is an accessory that is fitted to a model already under construction, in place of its coarsest parts. The set is cut for the Border BT-003 kit; other models of the same type have different dimensions, so the match always has to be verified.
The Ausf.F1 is an early version with a short 7.5 cm gun, a smooth front hull plate and sheet metal fenders, which carried tools, spare parts and a fire extinguisher on the vehicle. It is precisely the fenders that are the most visible on this version: the real sheet metal was a fraction of a millimeter when converted to scale, whereas an injection molded plastic part has to be several times thicker to be released from the mold at all. On the edges, on the folded-down ends and where the fender passes freely over the running gear, that difference is visible at first glance. Brass sheet puts the thickness back where it belongs and on top of that lets you bow or bend a fender naturally, as if driving over rough ground had scraped it.
A bending tool for photo-etched parts is the foundation. Make longer straight bends in one go along the whole length, not in sections — otherwise you get a wavy edge that you will no longer straighten. Where the bending tool will not reach, a steel ruler and a scalpel blade laid flat will help. Cut the parts out of the fret with a sharp knife on a hard surface, not with nippers, and level the remains of the tab with a fine-cut file. Before gluing, degrease the brass with alcohol and apply a metal primer — without it the paint holds on the smooth sheet only until the first touch of the tweezers.
The set is an accessory, not a kit. The base model, glue, primer and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
