An injection-molded plastic kit of the famous French submarine cruiser Surcouf in 1:350 scale from Hobby Boss. The model consists of a split full hull, a massive sail with a gun barbette and a hangar for the shipboard floatplane. The set contains two floats for the floatplane molded in clear parts, a stand and photo-etched extras (railings, a ladder, a nameplate). The instructions lead the build in only a few steps. The exact number of parts is given in the instructions in the box.
The Surcouf was the largest French submarine cruiser, commissioned in the 1930s. She was armed with a pair of heavy 203 mm guns in a watertight turret and with torpedo tubes, and she also carried a small reconnaissance floatplane in a hangar of her own. Until the arrival of the giant Japanese I-400 class submarines she was the largest submarine in the world. During the Second World War she served with the Free French forces and her story ended mysteriously, with her loss in the Caribbean in 1942.
A smooth hull is the foundation of a realistic submarine — fill the seam between the upper and the lower part and sand it with respiratory protection. Mask the clear floats of the floatplane and paint them carefully. A primer, a uniform dark hull shade applied with an airbrush and only light weathering are recommended; the sail and the gun benefit from a wash. Glue the photo-etched railings and ladder with cyanoacrylate and set the model on the supplied stand.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
