An aftermarket set for a ship kit in 1:350 scale. According to the name it holds a self-adhesive veneer deck with pre-printed plank laying and masking film. The veneer goes onto the plastic deck part and changes the overall impression of the model more than most other improvements, because on a ship the deck is the largest continuous area the viewer sees.

The key step: the covering film

The self-adhesive backing sits under a covering film, which is tempting to take off all at once. That is exactly where most spoiled decks come from. Take it off only from a narrow strip at one end of the part, seat the deck exactly along the axis of the hull and press it down. Only then draw the covering film off further and keep pressing the veneer down with a finger through a soft cloth. The material is thin and flexible, so it will sit even on a slight camber of the deck, but it cannot be peeled off again.

Finishing tips

Degrease and sand the plastic before gluing; every speck is imprinted under the veneer as a dot. Work in a room at ordinary room temperature, as the adhesive takes hold worse in a cold space. Once it is glued, you can fine-tune the tone of the wood with a very thin stain applied in two light coats. The seams between the planks are brought out by a dark wash wiped off across the direction of the planks. Always fix it with matte varnish at the end, or the veneer will soak up grease from the fingers.
