Injection-molded plastic kit of the American GUPPY IB class submarine in 1:350 scale from the maker AFV Club. The model can be built as a full hull or in the waterline version (afloat). It offers a newly tooled hull and conning tower, diving planes that can be set in the extended or the retracted position, and photo-etched parts for fine detail. Check the exact contents of the box and the range of markings against the manufacturer's part number.
GUPPY (Greater Underwater Propulsion Power) was an American modernization program that submarines built during the Second World War went through so that they would better suit postwar service. The changes included a more streamlined hull, a new conning tower and more powerful batteries for longer runs below the surface. The GUPPY IB version was one of the variants of this rebuild and the boats also served with Allied navies in the period of the Cold War.
Glue the parts with thin cement for plastic and the photo-etched pieces with cyanoacrylate glue. Decide whether you will build the model with the full hull on a stand or as a waterline version. Submarine hulls call for careful sanding of the seam around the circumference. Paint the hull in dark naval shades and bring out the transition at the waterline and the structures of the superstructure with a fine wash and restrained traces of corrosion.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
