Very Fire makes the Des Moines in 1:350 scale in two guises, and this is the premium one, marked as the DX version. The basic release of the same cruiser is a separate item, so when choosing, look precisely for the DX designation. Check the make-up of the premium package against the details on the box.
Des Moines was the lead ship of the class of the same name of heavy cruisers completed only after the Second World War. It was the peak of the development of the gun cruiser: the main armament in triple turrets was for the first time fully automatic, which meant a markedly higher rate of fire than on the older ships, and the dimensions of the hull matched that. Ships of this class served in the postwar decades and were among the largest cruisers with classic gun armament of all. The model thus captures a type that stands on the boundary between the wartime and the postwar era.
Lay the build out in sections and do not hurry the hull, as its shape holds the whole model. Fit the small deck items, the railings and the fine booms only once the large areas are painted. Postwar schemes tend to be simpler than wartime camouflage, but all the more they reveal every uneven transition and fingerprint, so smooth and fill the joints carefully. Paint with an airbrush and build the shades in layers, as a uniform gray area the size of a palm looks better with a fine difference of tone than with a single spray. The finished model is long and heavy, so reckon with a stand and with room in the display case.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
