A plastic kit of the USS Langley AV-3 in 1:350 scale from Trumpeter, the American seaplane tender converted from the first American aircraft carrier.
Responsibility details are not available.
An injection-molded plastic kit of the American seaplane tender USS Langley (AV-3) in 1:350 scale from Trumpeter. The model captures the ship after her conversion from the original aircraft carrier USS Langley (CV-1). The hull is laid out as a single piece, and the set holds a detailed flight and hangar deck, photo-etched parts and several shipboard seaplanes, including decals for the ship as well as the aircraft.
The Langley was the very first aircraft carrier of the US Navy (CV-1). In 1937 she was redesignated as the seaplane tender AV-3, with the forward part of her flight deck removed. During the war in the Pacific she served to transport aircraft; on 27 February 1942, on a supply run to Java, she was heavily damaged by Japanese aircraft and sunk. The conversion from a carrier to a tender gives the model an unusual, asymmetric silhouette.
Use thin cement on the plastic; the single-piece hull makes the build easier, with no keel seam to fill. Paint the deck and the hangar before closing up the superstructures. Glue the photo-etched railings and the fine parts with super glue after spraying. Finish the seaplanes separately and fit them at the very end. Bring out the panel lines with a wash.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
