This set is an accessory for a plastic kit, not a model. The contents are a veneer surface with printed deck plank laying and a self-adhesive backing, which is glued onto the plastic deck. The subject is the American design for the battleship Montana, whose construction was not completed, so the model follows the design form. The accessory is cut for one particular kit, Very Fire VF350913; check before buying that you have the same one.
On a battleship the main deck area is threaded with the barbettes of the main turrets, hatches, hatchways and the bases of superstructures. The veneer is therefore cut to shape with matching cut-outs, and it is exactly their fit that decides the result. Before taking the film off, lay the part on dry and go through every opening: the circular cut-outs around the barbettes have to fit without tension, or the veneer will lift around the perimeter once glued. If an opening is a hair too tight, widen it with a fine file on paper rather than with a knife.
Peel the film off in sections and lay from the middle of the deck. Press the material down gradually and keep checking that the edge is holding the line of the hull. Remove the overhang with a fresh blade run vertically along the plastic; a dull knife tears the wood and frays the fibers. Around the barbettes and hatches it helps to trim in short strokes. A very thin stain and a discreet dark wash in the seams come in handy for fine-tuning the look. Finally matte varnish, which protects the surface and matches its sheen to the rest of the model.
