A combined set from the maker Artwox Model for the plastic kit of the American battleship USS Wisconsin (BB-64) in 1:350 scale. According to the name it holds a veneer deck with pre-printed plank laying and a self-adhesive backing, and masking sheets with it. The kit is not part of it; this is an accessory bought for the model separately, and it is cut for one particular kit, Very Fire VF350912.
It takes over the visible face of the plastic deck with a thin layer of real wood carrying printed plank laying. The model thereby gains an unevenness of color and texture that paint on plastic cannot imitate, because every plank has a grain tone of its own. At the same time the most time-consuming part of the work on a deck falls away: drawing the seams by hand.
It pays to work from the middle out. Lay the deck on dry, find the longitudinal axis and glue the middle strip down first; only then work toward the sides. If you start from an edge, the inaccuracy adds up and comes out right in the middle of the deck, where it shows most. Do not hurry at the superstructures, elevator wells and hatches: the veneer can be led around them in short sections, checking between each that the outline still fits. If an opening is too small, trim it only after gluing, with a sharp knife run along the edge of the plastic part.
An accessory for a kit, not a ship model. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.
