Why it pays to add the traces of daily work

A new, clean sheet-metal floor looks like an unused part. A working surface, on the other hand, is recognized above all by where people walk and drive across it: the middle is worn light, the areas along the walls stay darker, there are oily stains around the machines and dirt collects in the corners. Once that rhythm is on the floor, the scene holds together even without further accessories, because the viewer subconsciously sees a place where work is done.

How to suggest the traces of daily work

• First decide where people walk, and only then lay out the light and dark areas accordingly.
• Put the oily stains where a machine or a vehicle stands, not in the middle of an open area.
• Keep the dirt along the walls and in the corners; in the middle it would look like an oversight.
• Add small clutter with objects, because a perfectly empty surface never looks used.
• Test the paint and the glaze on an offcut beforehand, choose the adhesive to suit the material of the part and follow the manufacturer's instructions.
