About product

Armory 1:72 Spitfire wheels, a smooth tread pattern and covered hubs

This is not a model of the aircraft but an accessory wheel set in 1:72 scale from the Armory company for kits of the Supermarine Spitfire fighter. The set represents the form with a smooth tire with no tread pattern and with a hub closed by a full cover. It is exactly this combination that sets it apart from the other Spitfire wheel sets from the same manufacturer.

How they differ from the wheels in the box

A plastic wheel in 1:72 is tiny and the parting line across the tread is awkward to sand down, because it is easy to spoil the circular outline. A resin casting is one piece and the smooth surface of the tire comes out right away with no extra work. The main benefit is the weighted tire effect: the lower part of the wheel is flattened the way the rubber sits under the weight of the aircraft, which is clearly apparent on the narrow landing gear of the Spitfire even in a small scale.

The real subject

The Supermarine Spitfire was a single-engine fighter with main landing gear retracting outward from the wing root and with an unusually narrow wheel track. Several types of hub and several tread patterns alternated on it in the course of production; a smooth tire with a fully covered hub is among the forms documented in period photographs. The right combination of pattern and hub therefore belongs to a particular machine and its period.

Building and painting tips

Wash the parts in warm soapy water and let them dry, otherwise the mold release agent will keep the paint off. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw or a knife and level the surface with a file; sand wet or with a respirator. They are glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). Apply a primer before painting, as every unevenness shows on a smooth tire with no engraving, so check the surface carefully. Seat the wheel with the flattened area pointing straight down.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of the Spitfire in 1:72 with smooth tires and covered hubs
  • Modelers who do not want to sand down the seam on a tiny plastic wheel
  • Those who want the model standing on loaded tires
  • Modelers with experience of resin and cyanoacrylate glue

The set is an accessory, not a kit of the aircraft. It is supplied unpainted; glue, paints and the base kit are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. It is a separate wheel set in resin meant to be swapped for the plastic wheels from the kit in 1:72 scale.

A smooth tire with no tread pattern and a hub closed by a full cover. The other Spitfire wheel sets from the same manufacturer have a different pattern and a lightened hub with spokes.

Yes, it is in 1:72 that the seam across the tread is hardest to remove from a plastic wheel, and the weighted tire effect is clearly visible on the finished model.

They are washed in warm soapy water, the casting blocks are cut off, the area is sanded down and they are glued with cyanoacrylate glue. A primer is applied before painting.
