What the Zeltbahn was for

The Zeltbahn was a section of strong water-repellent fabric and filled several roles at once. A soldier wore it thrown over him as a rain cape; once several sections were buttoned together it made a field tent for two men or for a larger group, and in the field it was commonly used as a cover over gear or as an improvised sheet on a vehicle. The Planetree pattern was among the first camouflage patterns the Waffen SS introduced on a larger scale, and it was reversible: one side in greens for spring and summer, the other in brown tones for autumn.
