Sunoco Oil Blue from Number Five is a deep blue on which the livery of the circuit cars of the Penske stable rested.
Responsibility details are not available.
A shade named after the American fuel brand Sunoco. Its blue and yellow combination belongs among the best remembered liveries of circuit racing of the turn of the 1960s and 1970s, and the blue in it makes up the ground of the whole surface.
Sunoco, the trade name of the Sun Oil Company, financed the team of Roger Penske at the time when Mark Donohue was winning for it in the Trans-Am series with a Camaro coupe, in Can-Am with a Porsche 917/30 and starting at Indianapolis with a McLaren M16. All those machines were joined by the same recipe: a deep dark blue across the whole body, a yellow arrow with the name of the sponsor and white race numbers. The same blue appeared on the Ferrari 512M and on the Lola T70 that the team built for endurance starts as well. It is a dark blue, but not one that blackens, so that the yellow elements stand out on it.
Builders of American circuit machinery who want to build a livery on the right tone of blue and not on a random dark color from a palette. Collectors who put a whole era of one team side by side will appreciate it too. The Porsche 917/30 carried the blue on its giant rear wing as well, so with this livery the surface goes far beyond the body itself.
