Stone Pavement Parts No. 5: stone and greenery in balance

The fifth set of the Zoukei-Mura paved range offers material for diorama builders who like to let nature take over from human work. Old paving overgrown with tufts of grass, moss in the joints under a gutter or weeds along a wall belong among the most striking motifs of all, because they tell of passing time. The segment concept gives freedom in where you leave the stone clean and where nature swallows it.

Use

• an overgrown yard or an abandoned alley
• the contrast of a kept and a neglected part of a scene
• a foundation under a country homestead or a ruin
• a paved path losing itself in grass

Combining with vegetation

Apply static grass into the joints only once the paving is fully painted and dusted, and set fine tufts into the cracks and at the foot of walls. Finely ground foam will stand in for moss faithfully, fixed with thinned PVA glue; finally tie the whole surface together with an earth pigment, so that stone and greenery sit in one light.

To modelers who enjoy narrative scenes with an atmosphere of time gone by, and to everyone who wants to give a finished model a setting that does not look sterile. The range is not tied to one scale, so what decides its use is only the artistic intent and the ratio of the stones to the model that finally parks on the paving. The contrast of a kept area in front of an inhabited house with the lush vegetation of an abandoned plot a few stones further on comes out nicely here too.
