A replacement for the deck surface of a model of the German light cruiser SMS Dresden in 1:700 scale. It is not a kit, but an accessory to the build: a thin layer with the pattern of a planked deck is stuck straight onto the plastic deck of the model and so takes the place of a painted surface. The cut matches the Dresden kit from the same maker.
A planked deck is the largest continuous area on a model of a ship and at the same time the one the viewer sees first. Painted plastic does have the grooves suggested, but a single uniform color, so the result comes across as a painted board rather than as wood. A ready-made deck has the pattern of the individual planks in slightly different tones, so the area comes alive, and in 1:700 scale, where a plank is thinner than a hair, that is a difference which cannot be imitated by hand.
First paint the plastic deck dark, so that bare plastic does not shine out of the seams. The surface must be flat, degreased and free of any putty residues. Lay the part down from one edge and press it down bit by bit, so that no bubbles are left. Try the bends around the superstructures dry beforehand. The finished deck is best only lightly fixed with matte varnish, as a thick coat of varnish will flood the pattern of the wood.
