The Piper L-4 is the military version of the Piper Cub light high-wing monoplane. Two seats in tandem, a doped fabric covering and the ability to take off from a short meadow made it an ideal machine for liaison flights and for directing artillery fire. After the war hundreds of these aircraft returned to civilian sport flying, and it is to them that the Pleasure Flying wording in the name of the set refers.
The kit depicts the Piper L-4 in 1:144 scale, so the finished model works out to a span of roughly seven and a half centimeters. The 2 in 1 marking in the name corresponds to a package covering two renditions; how many complete models and which markings it holds is given in the manufacturer's instructions.
A small scale forgives less than a large one, so separate the parts with a sharp blade a little away from the part and sand the manufacturing marks away with fine paper. It is practical to paint the struts, the landing gear and the propeller before fitting them, because a brush reaches them only with difficulty on a finished model. A fabric covering does not look convincing in a deep gloss; a matte or satin shade works better. Wash the parts in lukewarm water with detergent before painting and let them dry completely.
The kit suits collectors of small scales as well as modelers who want to liven up a display case of military types with a machine in civilian colors. Paints, glue and varnishes are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
