Vacuum-formed canopy glazing for the British Short Tucano T.1 trainer in 1:72 scale. Two pieces in the package, intended for the Airfix kit.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Tucano T.1 came from the Brazilian Embraer EMB-312, which the Belfast company Short Brothers modified and built under license for the Royal Air Force. The British version received a more powerful turboprop engine, a strengthened structure and a canopy adapted to training a two-man crew. The machines served as the basic trainer type from the end of the 1980s, and generations of pilots moved from propeller aircraft to jets on them.
The package contains two vacuum-formed clear parts. The second piece is not surplus but a spare in case the first does not work out while being cut; with thin-walled glazing one extra attempt is counted as standard.
Film drawn over a mold is considerably thinner than an injection-molded part from a kit. The glass then looks like glass on a finished model rather than like a block of plastic, and the cockpit is clearly visible through the frame. That fineness is paid for with care during the work: the part is cut out with a sharp knife along an outline traced with a soft pencil, and the edge is sanded down on fine paper laid on a flat board. It is bonded with clear white glue, which does not cloud the surface.
It pays to polish the clear part before fitting and to protect it with masking tape, because any repair after gluing means reaching for a knife on the model. The frames are sprayed separately and only the finished piece is seated on the fuselage, where it is enough to hold it until the glue sets.
