This kit of the AS-38 army bus from AVD Models is meant for 1:43 scale. That is the classic car scale in which most collector metal models of cars and trucks are released, so the finished model will fit a cabinet already under way without looking larger or smaller than the other vehicles. The maker has long worked on Soviet and Russian commercial vehicles, and its line of buses covers types you will practically not find elsewhere in model form.
Army buses make up a chapter of military vehicles that stands on its own and is often passed over. They carried neither cargo nor weapons but people: crews, equipment operators, staff personnel and specialists. That is exactly why they came about on the proven chassis of production trucks, whose maintenance and spare parts units had to hand. The body was subordinated to purpose rather than to comfort, and the vehicles saw out their days with rear-area and training units long after civilian transport had retired them. The model thus stands for the equipment of the rear, without which no unit would function.
On a bus the result is decided above all by the glass and by the flat surface of the sides. Before gluing, fit the body together dry and check whether the sides, the roof and the front line up without strain. Set the glazing in right at the end, with an adhesive that does not fog glass. The windows and their frames are worth masking before spraying rather than painting back over with a brush. A uniform military shade works better if, once dry, you break it up with a gently lighter cast on the middle of the surfaces and a darker tone into the panel lines. The lower part of the body, the wheel arches and the steps will take dust weathering.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
