A plastic kit of a Soviet truck combination in 1:43 scale from the maker AVD Models. The set consists of the ZIL-130 V1 semi-tractor and the ODAZ-794 flatbed semi-trailer - the complete rig as it was ordinarily used in commercial service. 1:43 is the classic car scale in which most collector metal models are released, so the finished combination will fit a cabinet exactly among them.
The ZIL-130 was among the most widespread Soviet trucks. It was built from the 1960s at the Moscow plant and is recognizable at a glance by its rounded cab with strikingly set-out fenders and headlights. It was powered by a gasoline V8, which made it an exception among diesel trucks. The designation V1 belongs to the semi-tractor: the chassis is shortened and instead of a cargo bed it carries a fifth wheel for the trailer. The ODAZ-794 is a semi-trailer from the Odessa plant, built for tractors of this weight class and used for ordinary carriage of general freight. The ZIL-130 V1 with an ODAZ trailer thus represents a typical long-distance combination of Soviet commercial transport.
It pays to begin with the chassis and the drivetrain and only then close up the cab. Bond the parts with liquid cement for plastic, which wicks into the seam by itself. Priming the whole model before painting is a good idea - the cab is usually finished in a saturated shade, and a uniform base makes sure the color sits the same on every part. The trailer invites weathering: deposits of dust on the fenders, scuffs on the load floor and a darker wash around the axle give the rig credibility. The small 1:43 scale forgives less than 1:35, so it helps to thin the paint more and spray in thin coats.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
